Exercise 2.3: Multiple points

The point of this exercise is to get across that the relationships in a photograph are not so simple as shown in the previous exercises, and that a group of objects can imply a variety of lines and shapes. The exercise stated to begin by placing one object to a not too simple background then to take a photograph. The to continue adding objects and taking a photograph each time. The final aim is to produce a final grouping which does not have regular shapes. The natural lighting in my living is fairly low and at height of day light hours shadows can dominate. I, therefore, increase the ISO to ISO400 and slowed the exposure to allow light.

The first object is an ornamental glass hippo shown moving into the frame.

The second object, a brown bear, comes in to the frame. I have located adjacent to the hippo so they form a pair of images. I felt that too far between the objects makes them look like two separate objects rather than any relation forming between them.

Photo 3: third object added 13secs, f20, ISO 400, 42mm

The third object, wood hippo, has been added. Tried showing in its correct stance but felt that laying down adds a different dimension, with the other two objects looking over it. It also add movement making you feel as though the wood hippo is trying to turn on its back. There is a triangle formed from the eyes and the bodies.

The black bear is added looking away disinterested in the other objects. But although looking away still feels as part of the group. The positioning is forming an oval with the short dimension being vertical from the chin of the wooden hippo to the shoulders of the brown bear, the long distance being horizontal to the extent of the objects.

Photo 5: five group 13secs, f20, ISO 400, 42mm

The addition of the fifth object is still keeping them as a group but having the wood elephant moving away from the centre three objects balance’s with the black bear on the right hand side.

The final image with the small wooden hippo added to the bottom of the image. I like this image as the objects are all facing in different directions creating movement throughout in the frame. The copy of the final frame below has some of the movement and shapes shown.

I decided that there was i bit too much dead space to the perimeter of the image so I cropped the image as below.
